Lesson 1

In this lesson, students are introduced to the five-stroke roll by explaining its name, discussing that it can be performed as a left hand or right hand lead, and are shown the rhythmic notation for an eighth note five-stroke roll. This type of roll is a counted roll, and the instructor demonstrates the rhythmic counting for the roll. Students are instructed to only accent the fifth note in each roll, and the lesson concludes by encouraging students to begin to develop their five-stroke rolls.
