YMU Our Story

Where It All Began

Our Story

YMU started with a clear mission: to build a real community where young people could come together, build confidence, and discover a sense of belonging through music.

This video explores the origin of YMU, the vision that continues to drive it, and how it has become more than a program, it's a family. It is a story of resilience and the power of music to strengthen lives and entire communities.

Get To Know Our Students

YMU students in grades 5–12 develop musical skills, build friendships, and gain real world experience through performances and collaboration. As the largest provider of free in-school music education in Florida, YMU serves more than 12,000 students across Miami-Dade County every week, creating pathways for creativity, belonging, and personal growth through music.

Watch A Performance

YMU's after-school performing ensemble programs focus on students who want to study music on a deeper level. Students can participate in performing Rock and Jazz Ensembles, Songwriting, Stage Production, and Internships. Classes are kept small to ensure a more intimate mentor-to-student experience. Our performing ensembles participate in over 200 performances during our annual concert season.
