Lesson 3

In this exercise, students are introduced to a rudimentary exercise played as a cadence in 7/8 where each hand alternates full-measures of seven eighth notes, grouped in 3, 2, 2, in which the first note in each group is accented. Students are guided through the exercise by mastering the 1st group of 3 notes, then expanding to add on the other groups of 2. The instructor demonstrates the pattern on snare, tenor drums, and bass drum to simulate a drumline. Students are walked through playing the pattern twice with each hand before alternating, then advance to play each measure only once before alternating hands. Students are challenged by reversing the pattern (2, 2, 3), and are required to switch hands for each grouping within the measure. The lesson concludes with a full drumline demonstration, and encouraging students to concentrate on correct sticking and counting, and practice performing the line at various tempos and dynamics.
