Lesson 1
In this lesson, students review the performance fundamentals and rhythmic values of whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes on snare drum. The symbolic representation of the note is displayed while the instructor explains each rhythmic element and demonstrates its performance. The rhythmic elements discussed are then placed into a rhythm pyramid from largest value to smallest value, and then performed in order from largest values to smallest values. Rhythmic elements are then mixed and matched into different measures of 4/4 for students to practice. In addition to reinforcing proper single stroke technique, students are introduced to a notated accent and its respective performance practice. The lesson concludes with encouraging students to master the last rhythmic line played, combining a quarter note, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes with selected notes accented.
