Lesson 14
In this lesson, students are taught to make an association between words (that happen to relate to a pizza) and their rhythmic sound, as well as the correct snare drum sticking for the words. The correlations made are: cheese for the quarter note value, mushroom for 2 eighth note equivalents, anchovies for three eighth note triplet values, and pepperoni for sixteenth note values. By creating several different slices of pizza in 4/4 equivalent meter, different cadences are created, such as “anchovies mushrooms pepperoni cheese” and are performed on the snare drum as they are recited aloud to reinforce the unity of the striking of the drum and the syllables of the words. The lesson concludes by encouraging students to create their own slices of pizza and challenge their friends!
