Lesson 5

In this lesson, students are taught their first cadence by first being introduced to its rhythmic representation on paper, which consists of consistent sixteenth notes in 4/4 incorporating syncopated accents on the snare head while the remaining sixteenth notes are to be played on the rim. The instructor carefully demonstrates each aspect of the 2-measure cadence, including separate focus points of rhythmic counting, accent placement, alternating single strokes between the rim and the snare, and then combining all elements 1 measure at a time, challenging the students by gradually working up to a faster tempo. The lesson concludes with encouraging the students to continue to practice the complete 2-measure cadence until fluidity is achieved.
