Modern Band Lesson 12
Introduction to Guitar, Bass, and Piano
GUITAR
In this lesson, students are walked through each notation line of “Billie Jean,” using more advanced guitar techniques, including substituting harmonies for what were previously only single note rhythms. In addition to reinforcing letter names of notes as they relate to treble clef notation, as well as concepts of eighth notes, eighth rests and whole notes, students will be shifting to 5th position, as well as incorporating “bar” techniques with chords, and will be using F#m, G#m, A, D and Db chords.

Piano
In this lesson, students are instructed how to build minor chords on the piano by correctly creating the half-step intervals that exist between the notes of the triad. Students are guided through a few minor chord building examples, and comparisons between a major chord and the minor chord with the same bass note are made in terms of the middle note shifting a half step while the top and bottom notes remain constant. The lesson concludes with encouraging students to discover more of the totality of the twelve minor chords on their own that exist on piano.
