Modern Band Lesson 7

Introduction to Guitar, Bass, and Piano

GUITAR

In this lesson, students are taught the rhythm guitar accompaniment to “Closer,” which only uses two chords - an E7 chord and an Amin chord, both which are reviewed in detail.  The notation for the song is included in a PDF file.  Rhythmic concepts of quarter notes and quarter rests, eighth notes, and ties are reviewed and utilized though interpretation of notation, as well as the occurrence of 1st and 2nd endings.  Strumming patterns are also introduced to keep a consistent approach and performance to the accompaniment.

BASS

In this lesson, students are walked through each notation line of “Dragon Tears." The notation for the song is included in a PDF file. In addition to reviewing several of the note names in bass clef notation, students must alternate between strings and fret fingers as well as use the same finger on the same fret and change strings. Rhythmic concepts of quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted quarter notes, and 16th notes are reinforced through accurate notation interpretation, and students incorporate hammer-ons and pull-off techniques to execute the piece, in addition to shifting to 5th position and 3rd position.
