In this lesson, students are introduced to how to create melodies for their compositions, which are an arrangement of single, memorable notes that play above the chord progression. Students are guided through a demonstration of the ‘smart piano,’ which simplifies a real piano by removing the unnecessary piano keys from each scale that you choose to match the chords used in a progression. By limiting the composer to only the notes that are in the scale, the composer can gain a sense of freedom and success creating melodies without the need for music theory knowledge. The lesson concludes with encouraging students to create melodies for their compositions.
